Location Benguerra Island is the second-largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, which is made up of five islands: Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Banque (or Shell Island), and Santa Carolina (or Paradise Island). Santa Carolina is the only true volcanic island, whereas the others are sand based. Benguerra Island is approximately 11km x 5.5 km and lies some 14 km northeast of Vilanculos. Seasons/Climate The island is warm and sunny year-round, and is exceptionally dry. Rain showers are generally restricted to the mainland, although some will occur over the island close to the rainy season. Breezes are usually light and the sea temperature varies with the seasons and currents between 24 °c and 30 °c. They are 172 square metres, making them the largest and most lavish of all the villas, with 30 metres of picturesque beach frontage on a large beautifully landscaped plot. They are located at the northern end of the property, ensuring the utmost privacy and uninterrupted views. The 2 Royal Beach Villas are located at the northern end of our property next to the Presidential Villa, with large landscaped gardens for a sense of total privacy and exclusivity, and 30 metres of picturesque beach frontage with magnificent sea views. They offer the next level of comfort with even more outdoor space for the discerning Azura guest to enjoy. The main bedroom and bathroom area is similar to the existing Infinity Beach Villas and guests can now delight in the luxury of their own lounge area connected together via a walkway with glass sliding doors, and surrounded by our indigenous gardens. The lounge comprises of comfortable sofas around a flat screen television, and has its own bathroom, as well as a tea/coffee area with minibar and Nespresso. The sofas can be converted to two beds for any children that may want to share. Outdoor areas are astounding, offering a 10m rim flow pool with a Jacuzzi on the one end, and a poolside sitting pavilion on the other, from which guests have access straight into the pool. The villa also has a double daybed under latte roof, as well as a single daybed on the deck, dining area, and beachside sala, all of which are perfect for relaxing and enjoying your own private space. Villa Amizade: Villa Amizade means friendship villa in our native Portuguese. This 2 bedroom en-suite villa is located at the western end of the property, with fantastic views out to sea and towards the setting sun. It is perfect for families or couples requiring more space and facilities. It offers a sitting area with flat screen TV, DVD, Bose Sound Dock and selection of games, opening onto extensive decking, dining and relaxation areas, including a ‘wine bar’. Cuisine at Azura Quilalea Accessibility Azura Quilalea offers a 20 minutes scenic helicopter flight from Pemba Airport to Quilalea Private Island. This is followed by a short walk to reception. They are hewn from local materials, with natural coral stone walls, makuti thatch roofs, carved beams and reed shuttered windows. The four Kaskazi Villas have fantastic views across multiple turquoise seas to Quirimba Island beyond. The four Kusi Villas have more exclusive locations, an extra outdoor bush shower, our ‘gym in a bag’, and hammocks for relaxing. The cliff-top Villa Quilalea offers the most astounding accommodation for a couple in the whole Archipelago, located on its own private part of the island where guests can enjoy magnificent views over the turquoise seas with dhows sailing by. Accessibility Transfers – We offer road transfers to and from South Africa, the Maputo Airport and Maputo hotels as well as scheduled boat transfers between Maputo and the Lodge. Road transfers between Santa Maria and Maputo via the Maputo Special Reserve are available. Boat Transfers – Most guests arrive at Machangulo Beach Lodge with a scheduled boat transfer (60 – 90 Minutes) from Maputo. There is only one scheduled boat from the lodge and one scheduled boat from the Maputo Marina per day, it is important that all guests are on time for transfers as these transfer times cannot be changed on short notice. We can schedule transfers at the time of reservation as accurate calendars are available about 18 months ahead. Rule of thumb: When booking flights, select a morning arrival flight and an afternoon departure flight. Upon arrival at the lodge the boat will stop in shallow water and you’ll be required to disembark into ankle deep water, please be prepared to wade in this shallow water. The sun can extremely be harsh, please protect your skin as much as possible. The Maputo Bay is protected from big ocean waves, but wind can create mist, therefore a light rain jacket can be most handy. Self-Drive We have the following self-drive options: to the Maputo Marina & To the parking bay near Santa Maria Village (requires a 4×4) Location Machangulo Beach Lodge is located at the centre of the channel between Inhaca Island and the dunes of the Santa Maria Peninsula. Weather Rains fall largely between December and March; humidity is higher in this period. • By April or May the rains start to subside, the sun comes out and humidity drops. • June to October is the dry season, with clear skies, plenty of sun and almost no rain. • November is less predictable than the rest, with some rains but also many sunny days.
